Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat pecans?

Use caution

Short answer: Only rarely: pecans are fatty, and old or moldy pecans can carry harmful molds.

Why it matters

The ASPCA lists pecans among fatty nuts that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and possibly pancreatitis.

Moldy nuts can carry molds that cause tremors and seizures in dogs (Merck, Pet Poison Helpline).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Pecan pie is sugar, corn syrup, butter and pecans, a rich mix that isn't a dog treat.
