Can dogs eat oats?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, plain cooked oats in small amounts are fine for most dogs. Skip oatmeal cookies with raisins or chocolate.

Also called or found in: rolled oats, oat flour, oatmeal

Why it matters

Tufts veterinary nutritionists say there's no reliable evidence that grains harm dogs, and whole grains supply vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and fiber.

Oatmeal raisin and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are dangerous because of the raisins and chocolate, not the oats (Merck, ASPCA).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories.
