Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat molasses?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little: molasses is a sugar syrup, not a poison, but it adds calories fast.

Why it matters

Sugar isn't on the ASPCA's list of foods that poison pets, but it adds calories and nothing your dog needs.

Veterinary nutritionists at UC Davis and Tufts say treats and extras should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories, so sweet extras eat into a small budget fast.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Gingerbread and molasses cookies for people often add spices and raisins, so check the whole recipe, not just the molasses.
