Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat maple syrup?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little, and only real or regular syrup: sugar-free syrups may contain xylitol.

Also called or found in: pancake syrup, sugar-free syrup

Why it matters

Sugar isn't on the ASPCA's list of foods that poison pets, but it adds calories and nothing your dog needs.

Veterinary nutritionists at UC Davis and Tufts say treats and extras should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories, so sweet extras eat into a small budget fast.

Sugar-free and 'low sugar' products are where xylitol turns up, so check the label of any sugar-free syrup (FDA).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Read the label on any sugar-free or 'lite' pancake syrup before it goes near a dog treat.
