Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat sugar?

Use caution

Short answer: Only as a tiny part of a treat: plain sugar isn't poisonous to dogs, but it's empty calories.

Also called or found in: white sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar

Why it matters

Sugar isn't on the ASPCA's list of foods that poison pets, but it adds calories and nothing your dog needs.

Veterinary nutritionists at UC Davis and Tufts say treats and extras should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories, so sweet extras eat into a small budget fast.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

If a recipe is for your dog, you can usually leave the sugar out. Watch for 'sugar-free' swaps, which may use xylitol.
