Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat ginger?

Use caution

Short answer: Only the small amount in a recipe: we found no official veterinary poison listing for culinary ginger.

Also called or found in: gingerbread, ground ginger, crystallized ginger

Why it matters

Culinary ginger isn't on the ASPCA's or AVMA's lists of foods that harm dogs. Those lists aren't complete, and no listing isn't proof of safety.

Gingerbread and ginger cookies usually add molasses, sugar, butter and sometimes nutmeg or raisins.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Candied and crystallized ginger are mostly sugar.
