Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat corn syrup?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little: corn syrup isn't toxic to dogs, but it's pure sugar with no nutritional value for them.

Also called or found in: light corn syrup, glucose syrup

Why it matters

Sugar isn't on the ASPCA's list of foods that poison pets, but it adds calories and nothing your dog needs.

Veterinary nutritionists at UC Davis and Tufts say treats and extras should stay under 10% of a dog's daily calories, so sweet extras eat into a small budget fast.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Corn syrup shows up in candies, pecan pie and glazes, which often bring nuts, chocolate or fat along with it.
