Can dogs eat coffee and caffeine?

Toxic: call for help

Short answer: No. Dogs are more sensitive to caffeine than people, and grounds, beans and espresso powder are concentrated.

Also called or found in: espresso powder, instant coffee, coffee grounds, coffee beans, energy drinks

Why it matters

Caffeine is a methylxanthine, like the theobromine in chocolate (ASPCA).

Pet Poison Helpline says a lick or two of coffee is unlikely to poison most dogs, but unused grounds, whole beans and caffeine supplements can cause serious poisoning.

What owners may notice

Hyperactivity, vomiting, changes in heart rate and rhythm, tremors and seizures (Pet Poison Helpline, ASPCA).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

Espresso powder in brownies and tiramisu, coffee-soaked ladyfingers and mocha frosting all count.
