Can dogs eat coconut oil?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little: small amounts are unlikely to cause harm, but it's pure fat.

Why it matters

The ASPCA says small amounts of coconut and coconut oil are unlikely to cause serious harm, but coconut's oils can cause upset stomach and loose stools.

Fatty foods are a pancreatitis risk factor in dogs (Merck).

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories. A tablespoon of any oil is over 100 calories, a big share of a small dog's treat budget.
