Can dogs eat coconut flour?

Use caution

Short answer: Only a little: coconut isn't seriously harmful in small amounts, but it can upset some dogs' stomachs.

Why it matters

The ASPCA says small amounts of coconut are unlikely to cause serious harm, but the oils in coconut flesh can cause upset stomach, loose stools or diarrhea.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Any treat counts toward the 10% treat budget: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog's daily calories. Coconut flour soaks up a lot of liquid, so dog treat recipes that use it are often eggier and richer.
