Can dogs eat carrots?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, carrots are one of the lowest-calorie treats for dogs.

Why it matters

UC Davis lists about 18 calories in 50 grams of raw baby carrots. Tufts counts about 5 calories per baby carrot.

Cut them to a size your dog can't choke on.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Carrot cake for people is sugar, oil and cream cheese frosting, and sometimes raisins and walnuts. Plain carrots are the treat.
