Can dogs eat blueberries?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, plain blueberries are a good low-calorie treat for most dogs.

Why it matters

Tufts lists blueberries among produce suited to the 10% treat budget: about 20 calories in a quarter cup (about 25 berries).

UC Davis veterinary nutritionists say fruits and vegetables are good treat options for many dogs because they're usually low in protein, fat, sodium and phosphorus.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Blueberry muffins for people bring sugar and butter. For dogs, plain berries are the treat.
