Can dogs eat bananas?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, a little plain banana is fine for most dogs, but it's higher in calories than berries.

Why it matters

Tufts counts about 34 calories in a quarter cup of banana. UC Davis lists about 25 calories in an eighth of a cup, mashed.

Both schools put treats at no more than 10% of a dog's daily calories.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Banana bread for people often adds walnuts, chocolate chips or raisins. Check before sharing.
