Pastry Ingredient Safety

Can dogs eat apples (seeds and core)?

Small plain amounts

Short answer: Yes, plain apple slices are fine for most dogs. Remove the core, seeds and stem first.

Also called or found in: apple seeds, apple core, applesauce

Why it matters

Tufts and UC Davis list apple as a low-calorie treat: about 30 calories in half a cup chopped (Tufts).

The ASPCA says apple stems, leaves and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, so serve the flesh only.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Apple pie and apple crumble add sugar, butter and spices. Plain baked or raw apple is the dog-friendly version.
