Can dogs eat almonds?

Use caution

Short answer: Only rarely and a few: almonds aren't a known poison, but they're fatty and hard to chew.

Also called or found in: almond flour, marzipan

Why it matters

The ASPCA says nuts like almonds, pecans and walnuts are high in oils and fats that can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and possibly pancreatitis.

If your dog ate some

If your dog ate a lot of it, or seems unwell afterward, call your veterinarian or an animal poison line: ASPCA (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661.

In the kitchen

Almond extract is mostly alcohol. See vanilla and other extracts. Almond flour is rich and fatty, so keep portions tiny.
