Can dogs eat alcohol in baking?

Toxic: call for help

Short answer: No. Rum cakes, liqueur fillings and boozy glazes carry alcohol, which is dangerous for dogs.

Also called or found in: rum cake, liqueur, bourbon balls, fruitcake, wine

Why it matters

The ASPCA says alcohol is absorbed quickly and can cause vomiting, wobbling, breathing trouble, tremors, coma and death.

Pet Poison Helpline lists liquor-filled candies among common sources.

What owners may notice

Vomiting, wobbling, tiredness and trouble breathing, coming on quickly (ASPCA, Pet Poison Helpline).

This list can't tell you if your dog is OK. Only a veterinarian can.

If your dog ate some

Call your veterinarian or an animal poison line now: ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Have the package, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Don't try home remedies unless your veterinarian or the poison line tells you to.

In the kitchen

Fruitcake often combines alcohol with raisins. Tell the poison line about both.
