Plan a Bake Day

Choose a recipe, write a shopping list, clean as you go and share what you made: plan a whole bake day with your grown-up.

Plan a Bake Day

A bake day is a whole baking project from start to finish, and you are the planner. Everything you have learned comes together here.

You will learn

  • How to choose the right recipe
  • How to write a shopping list
  • How to clean as you go

What you need

  • A recipe
  • A pencil and paper
  • A tin for sharing
  • Your grown-up

Steps

  1. Choose a recipePick a recipe that fits your skills and your time. Check every ingredient with your grown-up for allergies, including for anyone you will share with. Choose a day that works for your grown-up too.
  2. Write the shopping listRead the ingredients list and check the cupboards. Write down only what you need to buy, with the amounts. If you are doubling the recipe, do the math from Lesson 18 first.
  3. Plan your timeAdd up the prep, bake, chilling and cooling times. Leave extra time for decorating and cleanup.
  4. Set up and bakeOn bake day, tie on your apron, wash your hands and set out everything, like in Lesson 1. Your grown-up handles the oven and any hot, sharp or electric jobs. No tasting the raw dough or batter. Wash your hands again after touching raw egg.
  5. Clean as you goClean as you go means tidying while you bake, not all at the end. Put ingredients away and wipe up spills right away, but leave hot spills to your grown-up. While the bake is in the oven, wash bowls in warm, soapy water, and leave knives and other sharp tools for your grown-up.
  6. Share what you madePack treats in a tin for a neighbor, a friend or your family. Then write down what went well and what you would change next time.
