Cookie Character Faces

Bake one of these

What you need

  • A rolling pin
  • A round cookie cutter
  • Baking sheets lined with parchment paper (paper that stops sticking)
  • Small bowls and food coloring
  • Sprinkles and mini chocolate chips
  • The Cookie Character Faces printable

Steps

  1. Make the doughWash your hands first and check every ingredient with your grown-up. Make the cookie dough together and chill it in the fridge as the recipe says, so it gets cold and firm. No tasting the raw dough. Wash your hands again after you touch raw egg.
  2. Roll and cutRoll the dough out evenly, then press the round cutter straight down to make circles. Lift them onto a cool baking sheet, never one that just came out of the oven. Squish the scraps together and roll again. Wash your hands when you finish with the raw dough.
  3. Bake and coolYour grown-up bakes the cookies and moves the hot sheets. Let the cookies cool all the way, or the icing will melt and slide off.
  4. Plan the facesWhile you wait, sketch faces on the printable. Happy, sleepy, silly, surprised: how many feelings can you show with just eyes and a mouth?
  5. Mix and tintMake the icing and split it into small bowls. Stir a drop or two of food coloring into each until the color is even.
  6. DecorateSpread a base color on each cookie, then add eyes, mouths, hair and freckles with icing, chips and sprinkles. Let the icing set, which means dry and firm up, before you stack them.
