Breakfast in Bed Scones

Bake one of these

What you need

  • A baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • A bench scraper (a flat metal blade for cutting dough) or a butter knife
  • A pastry brush
  • A tray, a napkin and a small plate
  • Paper and markers for a card

Steps

  1. Plan in secretChoose your special someone and a morning with your grown-up helper. If the surprise is for your grown-up, ask a different grown-up to help, because the oven is always a grown-up job, even for a surprise. Check every ingredient with your grown-up, including any allergies your special someone has.
  2. Mix the doughWash your hands first. Make the scone dough, stirring gently just until it comes together. A light touch keeps scones tender. No tasting the raw dough.
  3. ShapePat the dough into a round and cut it into wedges with the bench scraper, using the size and number the recipe gives. Space them out on the sheet and brush the tops as the recipe says. Then wash your hands, because raw dough can carry germs.
  4. Bake and stirYour grown-up bakes the scones until golden. While they bake, make the strawberry milk and write your card.
  5. Set the trayYour grown-up takes the hot sheet out of the oven. Let the scones cool for about 10 minutes before you touch them. Put a scone on the plate, the milk in a cup and the card on the napkin. Your grown-up carries anything hot.
  6. DeliverKnock softly, say good morning and serve. Then clean up the kitchen together, so the surprise stays a happy one.

Make it yours

  • Draw a little menu for the tray
  • Add a few washed fresh berries to the plate
  • Make the dough the night before, chill it and bake in the morning
